Starter Guide: Using Colonised Grain Spawn
You’ve received: 1.5kg approx. sterilised grain, fully colonised with live mycelium.
What you need:
- Pasteurised or sterilised bulk substrate (e.g. Masters Mix, Hardwood, CVG)
- Disposable gloves
- 70% isopropyl
- Work in front of a laminar flow hood or inside a still air box
Instructions:
- Start in front of your laminar flow hood or under your still air box.
- Get prepared, put on your gloves, lay everything out and clean everything down with 70% isopropyl.
- Break up the spawn inside the bag: Gently crumble the grain to separate the mycelium evenly.
- Mix with substrate: Pour your colonised grain into your sterile/pasteurised substrate. Use roughly a 1:4 spawn-to-substrate ratio (you can adjust depending on how fast you want colonisation)
- Incubate: Place in a warm, dark environment suitable for your species. Wait until the substrate is fully colonised (usually 7–14 days).
- Fruit: Once fully colonised, cut the bag or initiate fruiting in your tent/chamber by introducing fresh air exchange, light, and high humidity.
Storage tip: Use spawn within 7 days of arrival or refrigerate to pause growth. Do not freeze.
Contamination tip: Always handle in a clean environment. Avoid introducing spawn into non-sterile substrates.
